Our client is a vegetable seed company with a strong global presence and an impeccable reputation. Their research site in the UK focuses on breeding mainly brassica crops; due to expansion in these crops, they are now looking to take on a Glasshouse Assistant. This job would involve assisting in plant cultivation in the glasshouse and also assisting the plant breeders in breeding activities.
As Glasshouse Assistant you will be responsible for all aspects of plant cultivation in the greenhouse, for plants grown in soil and in pots.
With the help of the team around you, you will monitor and control pest and diseases.
You will also assist in the pollination and seed harvest work on site.
Assist breeders in trial preparation, planting, and general field work as required.
To become Glasshouse Assistant, you will need an introductory level qualification in horticulture, plus 2-3 years experience of growing plants, ideally under greenhouse conditions.
PA1 and PA6 qualifications would be useful but not essential.
An interest in breeding work is desirable.
It is very important that you have the dexterity and patience to perform delicate pollination work.
Limited weekend work may also be required during certain parts of the year so you will need to be flexible.
A driving licence is required.
